The Gift of Being Seen: A Thoughtful Guide to Christmas Gifting
The best Christmas gifts aren't the most expensive ones. They're the ones that make someone feel truly seen.
Every December, it's easy to get swept up in the rush: the lists, the crowded shops, the last-minute panic buys. But when we look back on the gifts that stayed with us, it's rarely about what was inside the box. It's about the feeling that someone noticed us, thought about what we'd been through, and wanted us to know they cared.
That's the heart of everything we do at The Empathy Gift Co. So this year, here are a few ideas to help you give gifts that mean something.
Start with the person, not the price tag
Before you think about what to buy, think about who they are and what their year has looked like. Ask yourself a few simple questions:
- What has their year been like? Have they been busy, stretched, celebrating or struggling?
- What would help them feel looked after right now?
- What do they never make time for themselves?
The answers often point you to the right gift. A friend who's been run off their feet might love something that invites them to slow down, like a candle, a bath soak or an eye pillow. Someone starting a new chapter might treasure something that encourages them forward.
Remember the people who've had a hard year
Christmas is joyful for many, but for some it's one of the hardest times of the year. Someone who has lost a loved one, gone through illness, a breakup or a tough season may be feeling the gap more than ever.
You don't need the perfect words. A small, thoughtful gift that says "I'm thinking of you" can mean more than you'll ever know. It tells them they haven't been forgotten while the rest of the world celebrates.
The words matter most
The card is often the part people keep long after the gift is used up. That's why every box we send includes a card handwritten by me, never printed.
If you're stuck on what to write, keep it simple and honest:
- Tell them something specific you appreciate about them.
- Acknowledge what they've been through this year.
- Let them know you're there.
One or two genuine sentences are worth more than a page of clichés.
Choose gifts that keep on giving
Thoughtful gifting can be kind to the planet too. Look for gifts made sustainably or locally, and for ones that last beyond Christmas Day.
One of our favourite examples is our new range of plantable seed cards by artist Emi Benic. Each card is handmade from 100% recycled paper and embedded with native Australian flower, herb and veggie seeds. Once your message has been read, the card can be planted, so your words literally keep growing.
Each design also carries its own meaning, from celebrating the "human sunshines" in our lives to honouring strong, enduring friendships. That makes it easy to find one that says exactly what you want to say.
Don't forget the quiet heroes
Some of the people who make the biggest difference in our lives are the easiest to overlook at Christmas:
- Teachers who have spent the year encouraging our kids
- Carers who look after the people we love
- Colleagues and team members who kept everything going through a busy year
- Neighbours, coaches and volunteers who show up without being asked
A small gift and a few heartfelt words let them know their kindness didn't go unnoticed. For businesses, a thoughtful corporate Christmas box is a simple way to thank your team and clients in a way that feels personal rather than generic.
A few practical tips
- Order early. Christmas is the busiest time of year for Australia Post, so give yourself plenty of time, especially for interstate deliveries.
- Write your list by person, not by product. Jot down what each person's year has been like, then match the gift to them.
- Don't be afraid to customise. If a premade box is almost right, ask if an item can be swapped. Ours can be.
- Send it straight to them. If you can't be there in person, a gift delivered to their door with a handwritten note can feel like a hug from afar.
Give the gift of being seen
This Christmas, I hope you'll take a moment to think about who in your life needs to feel seen. It might be someone celebrating, someone struggling, or someone who quietly holds everything together.
At The Empathy Gift Co, we create premade and custom gift boxes for every step of the journey, each one finished with a handwritten card. Browse our Christmas collection, or get in touch and we'll help you create something just right.
With love, Esther The Empathy Gift Co
